Caribbean Urological Association
Advancing Urology in the Caribbean
Who are we?
The Caribbean Urological Association (CURA) was established in 1999 to allow collaboration among Caribbean urologists. Although business is conducted in English, membership is open to urologists practicing in English, French, Dutch and Spanish speaking countries located in the Carribean. CURA decided from its inception that its major purpose was to ensure that the highest quality care is provided to the Caribbean people. CURA has fostered a sense of fellowhip among Caribbean urologists. The Caribbean Urological Association is also an advocate for urological trainees around the region, hosting numerous training workshops and facilitating collaboration with international organisations.
History of CURA
The Caribbean Urological Association was formed on Saturday April 17, 1999 in Port of Spain, Trinidad during the 2nd Annual International Conference of the Trinidad and Tobago Urological Association. It was conceived out of a need for Urologists in small island states to have a collective voice, and to be able to share ideas and experiences. Some of the founding members present at the inaugural meeting at the Cascadia Hotel were:
Dr Lester Goetz (Trinidad and Tobago)
Dr. Robert Wan (Jamaica)
Dr. Lawson Douglas (Jamaica)
Dr. Deen Sharma (Guyana)
Dr. Michael Rampaul (Trinidad and Tobago)
Dr. Robin Roberts (Bahamas)
Dr. Gobin Bajrangee (Trinidad and Tobago)
Dr. Lester Goetz was elected as the inagural President of CURA with Dr. Michael Rampaul as the Secretary/Treasurer.
A decision was taken to locate the secretriat of CURA in San Fernando, Trinidad for convenience and sponsorship support.
