Who are we?

The Caribbean Urological Association (CURA), established in 1999, serves as a collaborative platform for urologists across the Caribbean. Despite conducting its business in English, CURA welcomes members from English, French, Dutch, and Spanish-speaking countries in the region. From its inception, CURA has been committed to ensuring the highest quality of urological care for Caribbean people. The association has successfully fostered a sense of fellowship among Caribbean urologists and advocates for urological trainees throughout the region. CURA is actively involved in hosting training workshops and facilitating partnerships with international organizations to support the professional development of urologists in the Caribbean.

History of the Caribbean Urological Association (CURA)

The Caribbean Urological Association (CURA) was established on April 17, 1999, during the 2nd Annual International Conference of the Trinidad and Tobago Urological Association in Port of Spain, Trinidad. CURA was born out of a recognized need for urologists in the Caribbean’s small island states to unite, providing a collective voice and a platform to exchange ideas and experiences.

The inaugural meeting, held at the Cascadia Hotel, brought together key figures in Caribbean urology, including:

  • Dr. Lester Goetz (Trinidad and Tobago)

  • Dr. Robert Wan (Jamaica)

  • Dr. Lawson Douglas (Jamaica)

  • Dr. Deen Sharma (Guyana)

  • Dr. Michael Rampaul (Trinidad and Tobago)

  • Dr. Robin Roberts (Bahamas)

  • Dr. Gobin Bajrangee (Trinidad and Tobago)

During this formative meeting, Dr. Lester Goetz was chosen as CURA's first President, with Dr. Michael Rampaul assuming the role of Secretary/Treasurer.
